Utah voter registration

First thing’s first, let’s check if you’re registered to vote. Once you’ve filled out this form, scroll down for instructions on how to register or vote if you’re already registered.

Voter registration deadlines

  • In Person: 7 days before Election Day in clerk’s office, but may also register during early vote and on Election Day.However, individuals must vote by provisional ballot if they: (i) register online or in person between 7 and 14 days before Election Day, (ii) register during early voting, or (iii) register on Election Day.
  • By Mail: Postmarked 30 days before Election Day, the deadline is extended to the next business day if this falls on a Sunday.
  • Online: 7 days before Election Day

Election day registration

An individual who is not registered to vote may register to vote, and vote, on election day or during the early voting period described in Section 20A-3-601, by voting a provisional ballot, if:

  1. the individual is otherwise legally entitled to vote the ballot;
  2. the ballot is identical to the ballot for the precinct in which the individual resides;
  3. the information on the provisional ballot form is complete; and
  4. the individual provides valid voter identification and proof of residence to the poll worker.More information on election day registration

Voter registration rules

To register in Utah you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States
  • have resided in Utah for 30 days immediately before the next election
  • 16- and 17-year-olds may preregister to vote, but cannot vote until they are 18 (Individuals may vote in a primary election if they are 17 years old on or before the date of the primary election and will be 18 years old on or before the date of the corresponding general election)
  • not be a convicted felon currently incarcerated for commission of a felony until your right to vote is restored
  • not be convicted of treason or crime against the elective franchise, unless restored to civil rights
  • not be found to be mentally incompetent by a court of law

How to register to vote in Utah

  1. Use our Register to Vote Tool to fill out the National Voter Registration Form.
  2. Sign and date your form. This is very important!
  3. Mail or hand-deliver your completed form to the address we provide.
  4. Make sure you register before the voter registration deadline.

Absentee ballot application deadlines

  • In Person: N/A
  • By Mail: If you need to change where your ballot is mailed, submit address change at least 7 days before Election Day.
  • Online: N/A

Voted absentee ballots are due

Postmarked 1 day before Election Day and received 6 days after Election Day.

Absentee ballot rules

Absentee ballots will automatically be sent to all registered voters. If you need your ballot sent somewhere other than your usual address, contact your local election official at least one month before the election so you have time to receive the ballot.

How to get an absentee ballot in Utah

  1. Use our Absentee Ballot Tool to prepare your application.
  2. Sign and date the form. This is very important!
  3. Return your completed application to your Local Election Office as soon as possible. We’ll provide the mailing address for you.
  4. All Local Election Offices will accept mailed or hand-delivered forms. If it’s close to the deadline, call and see if your Local Election Office will let you fax or email the application.
  5. Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.
  6. Please contact your Local Election Office if you have any further questions about the exact process.

Once you get your absentee ballot in Utah

  1. Once you receive the ballot, carefully read and follow the instructions.
  2. Sign and date where indicated.
  3. Mail your voted ballot back to the address indicated on the return envelope.
  4. Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.

Utah voter ID

In-person voter ID requirements

If you are voting in person in Utah (early or on Election Day), you must present one of the following forms of photo ID at the time you vote:

  • Utah driver’s license

  • Utah ID card

  • ID issued by Utah or a federal government agency

  • Utah permit to carry a concealed weapon

  • US passport

  • A US military ID card

  • Tribal ID card, Bureau of Indian Affairs card, or tribal treaty card (even if it doesn’t include your photo) If you don’t have a photo ID you can bring any two documents showing your name and address, such as:

  • A utility bill or copy of a utility bill dated within the last 90 days

  • A bank or other financial account statement or copy of a statement

  • A certified birth certificate

  • A Social Security card

  • A check issued by the state or federal government or a copy of a check

  • A currently valid Utah hunting or fishing license

  • Certified naturalization documents, but not a green card

  • A certified copy of court records showing your adoption or name change

  • A Medicaid or Medicare or Electronic Benefits Transfer card;

  • An ID card issued by a local government within Utah

  • An ID card issued by your employer

  • An ID card issued by a college, university, technical school or professional school within Utah

  • A current Utah vehicle registration

Absentee voter ID requirements

If you’ve voted in Utah before, registered in person, or provided ID at the time of registration, you don’t need to provide ID to vote by mail.

If you’re voting in Utah for the first time, registered to vote by mail, and didn’t provide ID when you registered, be sure to enclose a copy of your photo ID, or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or government document that shows your name and address when you return your ballot.
