Rhode-island voter registration

First thing’s first, let’s check if you’re registered to vote. Once you’ve filled out this form, scroll down for instructions on how to register or vote if you’re already registered.

Voter registration deadlines

  • In Person: 30 days before Election Day.
  • By Mail: Postmarked 30 days before Election Day. If the postmark is missing or unclear and the registration form is received no later than 5 days after the deadline, the individual shall be presumed to have been registered by the deadline.
  • Online: 30 days before Election Day

Election day registration

You may register in person on Election Day at your local Board of Canvassers but only for Presidential elections.

Voter registration rules

To register in Rhode Island you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States
  • be a resident of Rhode Island for 30 days preceding the next election
  • 16- and 17-year-olds may preregister to vote, but cannot vote until they are 18
  • not be currently incarcerated in a correctional facility due to a felony conviction
  • not have been lawfully judged to be mentally incompetent

How to register to vote in Rhode Island

  1. Use our Register to Vote Tool to fill out the National Voter Registration Form.
  2. Sign and date your form. This is very important!
  3. Mail or hand-deliver your completed form to the address we provide.
  4. Make sure you register before the voter registration deadline.

  • In Person: Received by 4pm, 21 days before Election Day.
  • By Mail: Received by 4pm, 21 days before Election Day.

Absentee ballot rules

Any registered Rhode Island voter may apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail.

How to get an absentee ballot in Rhode Island

  1. Use our Absentee Ballot Tool to prepare your application.
  2. Sign and date the form. This is very important!
  3. Return your completed application to your Local Election Office as soon as possible. We’ll provide the mailing address for you.
  4. All Local Election Offices will accept mailed or hand-delivered forms. If it’s close to the deadline, call and see if your Local Election Office will let you fax or email the application.
  5. Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.
  6. Please contact your Local Election Office if you have any further questions about the exact process.

Once you get your absentee ballot in Rhode Island

  1. Once you receive the ballot, carefully read and follow the instructions.
  2. Sign and date where indicated.
  3. Mail your voted ballot back to the address indicated on the return envelope.
  4. Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.

In-person voter ID requirements

If you are voting in person in Rhode Island, you must present one of the following forms of ID at the time you vote:

  • Rhode Island driver’s license or voter ID card
  • US passport
  • Photo ID issued by a school or college in the US
  • US military ID
  • Photo ID issued by the US government or State of Rhode Island
  • Government issued medical photo ID

Absentee voter ID requirements

If you’ve voted in Rhode Island before, registered in person, or provided ID at the time of registration, you don’t need to provide ID to vote by mail

If you’re voting in Rhode Island for the first time, registered to vote by mail, and didn’t provide ID when you registered, be sure to enclose a copy of your photo ID, or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or government document that shows your name and address when you return your ballot.
