Voter registration rules

To register in Nebraska you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States;
  • be a resident of Nebraska;
  • be at least 18 years of age or will be 18 years of age on or before the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November;
  • not have been convicted of a felony, or if convicted, two years have passed since the sentence was completed (including any parole);
  • not have been officially found to be mentally incompetent; and
  • not have been convicted of treason, unless you have had your civil rights stored.

How to register to vote in Nebraska

  2. Sign and date your form. This is very important!
  3. Mail or hand-deliver your completed form to the address we provide.
  4. Make sure you register before the voter registration deadline.

Any registered Nebraska voter may apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail.

How to get an absentee ballot in Nebraska

  2. Sign and date the form. This is very important!
  3. Return your completed application to your Local Election Office as soon as possible. We’ll provide the mailing address for you.
  4. All Local Election Offices will accept mailed or hand-delivered forms. Your Local Election Official will also let you fax or email the application.
  5. Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.
  6. Please contact your Local Election Office if you have any further questions about the exact process.

Once you get your absentee ballot in Nebraska

  • Once you receive the ballot, carefully read and follow the instructions.
  • Sign and date where indicated.
  • Mail your voted ballot back to the address indicated on the return envelope.

If you’re voting in Nebraska for the first time, registered to vote by mail, and didn’t provide ID when you registered, be sure to bring a copy of your photo ID, or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or government document that shows your name and address when you vote.
