Voter registration deadlines
- In Person: Election Day.
- By Mail: Postmarked 30 days before Election Day. Received 27 days before Election Day.
- Online: N/A
Election day registration
If you have missed the voter registration deadline, you can still register to vote at your county election office through close of polls on Election Day, except between noon and 5:00 p.m. the day before the election. You’ll have to register at the office of your Local Election Office – not at a polling place. Contact your Local Election Office for questions about the process. Photo ID or proof or residency is required.
Voter registration rules
To register in Montana you must:
- be a citizen of the United States
- be at least 18 years old on or before Election Day
- be a resident of Montana and of the county in which you want to vote for at least 30 days before the next election
- not be in a penal institution for a felony conviction
- not currently be determined by a court to be of unsound mind
- meet these qualifications by the next Election Day if you do not currently meet them
How to register to vote in Montana

- Mail or hand-deliver your completed form to the address we provide.
- Make sure you register before the voter registration deadline.

Absentee ballot application deadlines
- In Person: Received 1 day before Election Day.
- By Mail: Received by noon, 1 day before before Election Day, but we recommend applying at least 7 days before Election Day.

Absentee ballot rules
Any registered Montana voter may apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail.
How to get an absentee ballot in Montana
- Use our Absentee Ballot Tool to prepare your application.
- Sign and date the form. This is very important!
- Return your completed application to your Local Election Office as soon as possible. We’ll provide the mailing address for you.
- All Local Election Offices will accept mailed or hand-delivered forms. If it’s close to the deadline, call and see if your Local Election Office will let you fax or email the application.
- Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.
- Please contact your Local Election Office if you have any further questions about the exact process.
Once you get your absentee ballot in Montana
- Once you receive the ballot, carefully read and follow the instructions.
- Sign and date where indicated.
- Mail your voted ballot back to the address indicated on the return envelope.
- Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.

Montana voter ID
In-person voter ID requirements
If you are voting in person in Montana, you must present one of the following forms of ID:
- Photo ID that shows your name, including a driver’s license, school ID card or tribal photo ID
- Document such as a utility bill, bank statement, pay statement, confirmation of voter registration, government check, or other government document that that shows your name and current address If you have voted in Montana before, registered in person, or provided ID at the time of registration, and don’t have any of these forms of ID with you when you vote, you can fill out a Polling Place Elector ID form. If the election worker is able to verify the information on the form, you can still vote.
Absentee voter ID requirements
If you’ve voted in Montana before, registered in person, or provided ID at the time of registration, you don’t need to provide ID to vote by mail.
If you’re voting in Montana for the first time, registered to vote by mail, and didn’t provide ID when you registered, be sure to enclose a copy of your photo ID, or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or government document that shows your name and address when you return your ballot.
