Election day registration
You can register and cast a ballot up through Election Day by appearing in-person at a Voter Service and Polling Center during the Early Voting period or on Election Day. Contact your Local Election Office if you have any questions.
Voter registration rules
To register in Colorado you must:
- be a citizen of the United States;
- be a resident of Colorado 22 days prior to Election Day;
- be 18 years old on or before Election Day; and
- not be serving a sentence of detention, confinement, or parole for a felony conviction.
How to register to vote in Colorado

- Mail or hand-deliver your completed form to the address we provide.
- Make sure you register before the voter registration deadline.

Absentee ballot rules
Absentee ballots will automatically be sent to all registered voters. If you need your ballot sent somewhere other than your usual address, contact your local election official at least one month before the election so you have time to receive the ballot.
How to get an absentee ballot in Colorado
All registered Colorado voters receive mail ballots. You only need to apply for an absentee ballot if you need your ballot mailed someplace other than your usual address. If that’s the case:
- Use our Absentee Ballot Tool to prepare your application.
- Sign and date the form. This is very important!
- Return your completed application to your Local Election Office as soon as possible. We’ll provide the mailing address for you.
- All Local Election Offices will accept mailed or hand-delivered forms. Your Local Election Office will also let you fax or email the application.
- Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.
- Please contact your Local Election Office if you have any further questions about the exact process.
Once you get your absentee ballot in Colorado
- Once you receive the ballot, carefully read and follow the instructions.
- Sign and date where indicated.
- Mail your voted ballot back to the address indicated on the return envelope.
- Your voted ballot must arrive by the deadline or it will not be counted.
- Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.

Colorado voter ID
In-person voter ID requirements
If you are voting in person in Colorado, you will need to provide a valid form of ID at the time you vote. All the forms of ID that show your address must be a Colorado address in order for the form of ID to qualify.
Valid forms of ID include:
- A valid Colorado driver’s license or valid ID card issued by the Colorado Department of Revenue
- A valid US passport
- A valid employee ID card with a photograph issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the US government or of Colorado, or by any county, municipality, board, authority, or other political subdivision of Colorado
- A valid pilot’s license issued by the federal aviation administration or other authorized agency of the US
- A valid US military ID card with a photograph
- A copy of a current (within the last 60 days) utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your current name and address
- A certificate of Degree of Indiana or Alaskan Native Blood
- A valid Medicare or Medicaid card
- A certified copy of a US birth certificate
- Certified documentation of naturalization
- A valid student ID card with a photograph issued by an institute of higher education in Colorado
- A valid veteran ID card with photo
- An valid ID card issued by a federally recognized tribal government certifying tribal membership
Absentee voter ID requirements
If you’re not voting for the first time in Colorado, you don’t need to show ID to vote.
If you’re a first time Colorado voter who registered by mail and you didn’t provide ID when you registered, you’ll need to provide a photocopy of one of the following forms of ID along with your mail ballot:
- A copy of a current photo ID showing your name and photograph
- A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and address
