Voter registration rules
To register in Alaska you must:
- be a citizen of the United States;
- be at least 18 years old within 90 days of completing your registration;
- be a resident of Alaska;
- not be a convicted felon (unless unconditionally discharged); and
- not be registered to vote in another state.
How to register to vote in Alaska

Absentee ballot rules
Any registered Alaska voter may apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail.
How to get an absentee ballot in Alaska
- Use our Absentee Ballot Tool to prepare your application.
- Sign and date the form. This is very important!
- Return your completed application to your Local Election Office as soon as possible. We’ll provide the mailing address for you.
- All Local Election Offices will accept mailed or hand-delivered forms. Your Local Election Office will also let you fax or email the application.
- Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.
- Please contact your Local Election Office if you have any further questions about the exact process.
Once you get your absentee ballot in Alaska
- Once you receive the ballot, carefully read and follow the instructions.
- Sign and date the affidavit where indicated.
- A witness must sign your absentee ballot envelope to verify your signature.
- Return your voted ballot back to the address indicated on the return envelope.
- Double-check the deadlines and be sure to cast your voted ballot on time to be sure it is counted.

Alaska voter ID
In-person voter ID requirements
If you are voting in person in Alaska, you must present one of the following forms of ID when you vote:
- Driver’s license or state ID
- Voter ID Card
- Birth Certificate
- Military ID
- Passport
- Hunting or fishing license
- Any other valid photo ID
- A current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check, or other document issued by the government with the name and current address of the voter. An election official may waive the ID requirement if an Election Day official can vouch for your identity, unless you are voting in Alaska for the first time, registered to vote by mail, and didn’t provide ID when you registered.
Absentee voter ID requirements
If you’re not voting for the first time in Alaska, you don’t need to provide ID to vote by mail.
If you’re voting for the first time in Alaska, registered by mail, and didn’t provide a copy of your ID when you registered, then attach a copy of one of the following with your completed absentee ballot:
- Driver’s license, state ID card, birth certificate, passport, hunting or fishing license, or another current photo ID
- Utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check, or other government document that shows your name and address
